Terry Buchwald
Elvis lives on
The wide spectrum
of an impressive repertoire

Saturday night at the first night of our traditional Croatian Lawn Fete we enjoyed a fantastic performance by Terry Buchwald the artist from Western New York. He is a professional vocalist, recording artist and entertainer, nationally acclaimed Elvis tribute artist, who surprised us with great talent and range of his music, from Elvis to contemporary performers such as Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, and Keith Urban. We were honored to have him performing his tribute show at our annual event for the very first time.
The reception from the audience was fantastic and the interaction with the talented musician on stage made this a memorable moment with an emphasis on the great artist-fan relationship. He brought us superb impersonations, great entertainment, excellent music and a good time. His energy was reaching to the young and older fans with the wide spectrum of an impressive repertoire; he truly captured our attention and motivated us to get together and participate. It was a pleasure to watch him perform and I appreciated his time for a brief interview for our OLB website.

You have blown us away with your talent, energy and an amazing performance.
-Thank you, well I got to say I play off the crowd, so it’s a great crowd and everybody is into it and that just makes me have a better time, and you know more energy from the crowd, more energy to me, and it just goes back and forth.
The great energy is that real thing that we all are looking for, and I have to say you just gave us the greatest gift!
- O, thank you! What a crowd, that crowd was so into it! You know what, when we got here all I could think was how hungry I was, everything smelled so good, all the food, I got some to go yes, but I can’t wait. But you know what? When we got here everybody was so nice, and everybody was just so great and once I started playing everybody got up and danced and just makes me want to have more fun and sing more songs.
How important to you is the feed back from the audience?
- Feed back from the audience is probably one of the most important things for me. I really don’t like people to sit down, but if they are sitting down having fun and clapping that’s good I just want interaction. I love the interaction, and here it was a hundred percent.
I didn’t expect that, I thought you were going to do your numbers and disappear. I saw you on the television, I know you are a big star and we are lucky to have you here.
-I’m happy to be here!
I wonder if you would compare this crowd to your audience at other ethnic festivals and gatherings?
-You guys top them! The energy is good and everybody gets into it, I think Elvis has span to so many years, many generations, so many different ethnic groups. You know I could go to so many different places and play and sing Elvis, but you guys definitely have the most energy.
This is so great and I’m so glad you took time for this conversation.
- You know what? You didn’t even have to interview me; you could just look into the crowd and how they got into it. I hope I can come back; I would love to come back.
Promoting our church and community is our main goal and you did an amazing job at doing it. This interview will be published on our website.
-Thank you very much I appreciate it and I’m looking forward seeing it on the website.

Terry Buchwald
Elvis još živi
Široki spektar
impresivnog repertoara

U subotnju vecer prvog dana našeg vec tradicionalnog hrvatskog piknika uživali smo u fantasticnom koncertu Terry Buchwalda umjetnika iz Western New Yorka.

Fascinirali ste nas svojim talentom, energijom i iznenadujucim performansom.

Award for an
Extraordinary Man
A Great Diocese Award
for our parishioner

Our parishioner, Mr. David P. Petrus, received the «Lay Award of St. Joseph the Worker». He has been selected to receive this prestigious award in recognition of his extraordinary work and unselfish dedication to Our Lady of Bistrica Church. This award was conferred by the Bishop of Buffalo at a concelebrated Mass in St. Joseph Cathedral on April 26, 2009.

David is well known in our community where he serves as the President of our Parish Council and as a member of the finance committee. He works as a stationary engineer (licensed operator of boilers and other equipment) at Tonawanda Coke Corporation supplying foundry coke to the U.S. and Canada. Mr. Petrus is also a lector at our Saturday Mass. Not only is his liturgy reading of the Scripture enjoyable for the listeners, it is also very spiritually rewarding. As a member of our church he is well known as the head bartender at all of our main events and celebrations, as our mechanic, and most of all, as a great man.

David and his wife Judy have been active members of our parish for many years. Their sons, Frank and Scott and three grandsons, Donovan, Alex and Andrew, are certainly proud of David’s achievements and success. He is a person who is always ready to help and works hard to help our community. His great work is an inspiring example for those who would like to get involved in creating a better future for our church and community.

It is a pleasure and an honor to congratulate David and his family.

Croatian Easter eggs
Unique kind of Folk Art

A traditional Easter custom in Croatia is the coloring and exchanging of Easter eggs. Hens start laying eggs in the spring and the birth of a small chick from the egg symbolizes Jesus Christ’s rising from the grave, resurrection and eternal life.

For the Easter holidays, giant painted eggs were placed in thirteen cities which included: Dubrovnik, Budapest, Bratislava, Klagenfurt, Madrid, Bilbao, Barcelona and New York. Twenty American TV stations from Anchorage, Alaska to Florida, shared the information about the eggs and confirmed for the organizers that the project was very interesting.

Eggs were painted by a group of twenty folk artists in the style of Croatian folk art. The Croatian National Tourist Board funded all costs for the international transport of four eggs. The Consulate of the Republic of Croatia in New York was the main sponsor for the egg in New York City.

Some of the great Easter eggs (in the pictures) are displayed in the Square of Ban Jelacic and in front of St. Mark's Church with the Croatian Parliament in the background, as symbols of friendship, joy and love of Easter, and as a gift to the Croatian Government for Easter of 2009.

Hrvatske Pisanice
Unikati naivne umjetnosti

Za pisanicu iz New Yorka, glavni sponzor bio je konzulat Republike Hrvatske u New Yorku.

Velika uskršnja jaja (na slikama) izložena su naTrgu Bana Jelacica i Trgu Svetog Marka ispred crkve i Hrvatskog sabora kao simbol prijateljstva, ljubavi i radosti Uskrsa, kao dar Vladi RH povodom Uskrsa 2009. godine.

Resurrection of Jesus
Time of hope

Easter is the celebration of Jesus’ victory of life over death. It is the feast of His Resurrection.

After enduring indescribable sufferings and agonizing death Jesus rose glorious and triumphant from the tomb.

Jesus is giving us strenght and hope that some day we too will rise from the grave and be united with Him forever.

Happy Easter! Rejoice and be glad!

Isusovo Uskrsnuce
Vrijeme nadanja

Sretan Uskrs! Radujte se i veselite!

New voice for life
Pro-life youth group

Our active and ambitious Pro-life youth group held its very first meeting at our parish last December. Leaders of this group are John and Dee Dee Tomasello. After initial prayer they welcomed present members, involved them in the discussion about pregnancy, tribulations, abortion and important protection of unborn children.

The second meeting of Pro-life youth group was nearly canceled because of the snowstorm and cold weather in January, but to everyone’s surprise the number of participants increased. They talked about the future actions and were discussing human cruelty in a crime of abortion. At the end of their meetings they often serve soft drinks, snacks, pizza and hang out.

At their third meeting they gathered 32 people proving that young people are interested in this subject and care about this agenda. They were deciding on the projects that they would like to participate in and decided to pray outside the abortion clinic.

Early on March 6th, our youth group held meeting outside the abortion clinic on Main St. downtown Buffalo. More than 40 people participated, they prayed rosary and chaplet of mercy in a peaceful protest. Many of them were greatly touched by the experience and would like to volunteer in many other activities around the area with participation in regular prayers.

The next LIFE ON THE LINE Pro-Life Youth Group meeting is March 19 at 6:30 P.M. - 9:30 P.M. in Cardinal Stepinac Auditorium (room upstairs). New members are always Welcome!

The Season of Advent
Reflection of the meaning of Christmas

Advent is an English version of a Latin word Adventus - “a coming”. It refers to the four-week period before Christmas during which we spiritually await the coming of Christ at Christmas.

The Church has given us these four weeks to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Son of God. He comes to us in grace each time we celebrate the Eucharist and pray. Only if we are united with Him in prayer we will recognize his presence

Advent is the time, which reminds us of the final coming of Christ in glory. This will be the time when He will come to judge the living and the dead and each one will receive what his deeds deserve. We have to prepare for His final coming and readyness to meet Him whenever He comes.

Finally, Advent is the time to reflect on the real meaning of Christmas. It is a time to look deep into our hearts and see if there is anything that would stand on the way to His coming.

In the Book of the Prophet Isaiah we read:
“A voice cries out: In the desert prepare the way of the Lord! Make straight in the wasteland highway for our God! Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill shall be made low; the rugged land shall be made a plain, and the rough country, a broad valley. Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed.”

Vrijeme Adventa

u molitvi cemo prepoznati njegovu prisutnost.

U knjizi proroka Izaije smo procitali:
"A glas zavapi: U pustinji Pripravite put Gospodinu! Napravite u pustoši stazu Bogu našemu! Svaki dolina neka se ispuni, svaka gora i brežuljak nek se izravna, a ispresijecana zemlja postane ravnica, neka gruba zemlja postane široka dolina. Tada ce se ocitovati Slava Jahvina."

Our Lady of Rosary
Meditation of the mysteries of Christ

The rosary is an old prayer tracing its roots to the twelfth century when the people who could not read and write would count their prayers on the string of beads.

During the 15th century the rosary developed into familiar prayer form, as we know it today. Dominicans were very influential in the growth, devotion and spread of this prayer.

The Blessed Mother urged everyone to pray the rosary during her apparitions at Fatima, Portugal. She was named "the Lady of the Rosary," she promised that the Rosary would help people reinforce their faith, convert sinners and bring
a peace to the world.

The feast of Our Lady of Rosary is celebrated on October 7th when all are invited to meditate upon the mysteries of Christ following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was the mostly related to the incarnation, passion and glorious resurrection of the Son of God.

Gospa od Krunice
Meditacija posvecena Kristovim tajnama

Oktoberfest time of the year
Homemade food is always
pleasing to the palate.

It's that time of the year again. Changing leaves, abundant harvests of our local specialties of apples, peaches, tomatoes and much more.

Our thoughts start to turn to winter and what we'll have to do to prepare. Outdoor projects like planting, blacktopping the driveway and canning consume our thoughts. In addition to our own personal projects, it is also the time to gather with family and friends before the weather gets too harsh.

Traditionally at Our Lady of Bistrica, we have our Oktoberfest dinner, where the ladies of our church prepare a homemade dinner, Croatian style, which is always pleasing to the palate.

On Sunday October 12th, 2008 after the mass at 1:00 at the Cardinal Stepinac Auditorium, the ladies will be preparing a menu of stuffed peppers, chicken, potatoes, salad and apple strudel for dessert (of course refreshments also).

Bring some family members who haven’t come around for while for everyone to see. Please come and join us for food, meet your old friends and make new ones.

s obitelji i prijateljima prije nego vremenske prilike postanu previše oštre.

Naša župa Our Lady of Bistrica tradicionalno prireduje Oktoberfest zakusku, za koju domacice naše župe spremaju okrepljujuci hrvatski rucak, koji uvijek prija našem nepcu.

Molimo vas dodite
i pridružite nam se. Uživajmo u dobrom zalogaju
i ugodnom druženju sa starim i novim prijateljima.

Petition for Our Sisters
Our Sisters are leaving?

We are still trying our best to keep our dear sisters with us at Our Lady of Bistrica. They have been called back to Croatia by Mother General of their order and her council. We are praying and doing all that we can in the hope that she and her council will reconsider their decision.

The parish council wrote to them last Spring with an offer, which sadly, they have refused. Parish council started an initiative of signing the petition to keep sisters with us. Peticija za Naše Sestre
Da li naše Sestre odlaze?

Još uvijek pokušavamo, kako najbolje znamo, zadržati naše drage sestre s nama u župi Our Lady of Bistrica.

Kolovoza. Peticiju možete potražiti tijekom citavog tjedna u predvorju naše crkve. Gospodin Frank Grgas, podpresjednik našeg vijeca, trenutno prikuplja potpise koje ce nastavljati skupljati i svake subote za vrijeme Binga u dvorani Kardinala Stepinca sve do 30. Kolovoza! Molimo Vas, trebamo i Vaš potpis na ovoj listi.

Takoder želimo ohrabriti naše župljane da osobno napišu pismo Casnoj Majci i njezinu vijecu te izraze koliko nam naše sestre znace.
Vrijeme je veomo važno, molimo nemojte odgadati.

A letter from Mother General
A letter from Mother General
of Sisters of Mercy

A few months ago, Parish council members sent an official letter to the Mother General of Sisters of Mercy, with the purpose of examining the decision to call our sisters back to Croatia, and asking their approval for our sisters to continue their mission in our parish. This letter was signed by all members of the Parish council on the behalf of our parishioners.
A response from Mother General was sent to Fr. Christopher’s address, and we have since learned that their decision has not changed. We would like to encourage our parishioners to write and to send a letter to Mother General in the interest of saving the sisters in our parish.
If you need any help with writing, sending your letters, or if you have any questions, please contact us at the address: Ourladyofbistrica@gmail.com

Pismo Casne Majke
Pismo Vrhovne glavarice
Sestara Milosrdnica

The kind words
Note from our priest is a positive
model for motivation

We know what it takes to make something happen. Every event at our parish, was made possible by volunteers who are contributing to our community activities. Everyone who worked on preparation for any of our events knows - it isn’t easy. It’s much easier to forget that everything we were taking for granted, takes a careful planning, hours of preparations, and the most of all – the hard work.

Sometimes before, during or after some special functions we tend to be the great critics, taking a hard look at the things, and focusing on the details we didn’t like and enjoy. We would often have done something different (rarely better), but seldom we like and appreciate what we have, until (in some cases) we lose it. It’s easy to forget that someone worked, for days in advance, preparing our meals, building the tents, placing our tables and chairs. While we are having fun, our volunteers are still working in the kitchen, selling tickets, serving us drink and keeping us safe. We paid for our tickets do we owe them something? Well, it feels good to hear a positive comment, to recognize someone’s appreciation and gratitude for all that they are doing and have done.

Our new Bulletin is presenting a Father Chris’s message or Thank you note for everyone who worked hard to make our Annual picnic possible. This note from our priest is a positive model for motivation of the participants and volunteers, and inspiration for those who are going to help us in the creating our future events. We are publishing it here in its entirety:

“It took many hours to prepare for the picnic: setting up the property, putting up tents, tying up the meats for roasting, and then roasting the lamb, pork and chickens, baking strudel and nut rolls, making potato and macaroni salad, bread, working in the kitchen, working behind the bar, making the theme baskets and watching over the auction, souvenir booth, games, bounce house, bake sale, Bell Jar table, cleaning up after the picnic. May God bless all of the people who did all of that work. Thank you from the bottom of our heart. Fr. Chris.”

Ljubazne rijeci

Fr. Chris.”

Prayer for our Sisters

Next Tuesday's (April 8th) is our weekly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (from after the 7:30 AM Mass until 6:00 PM) and the Rosary and Benediction at 6:00 PM. Adoration will be dedicated for the intention of keeping our Sisters in our parish. We kindly ask our parishioners to join us in prayer to beg God for a special favor.

Our Croatian Sisters - the Sisters of Charity of
St. Vincent de Paul of Zagreb - have been called home to Croatia by the Mother General of their order. This news is a cause of great sadness for the all members of our Lady of Bistrica, as we have a love and attachment for each other. They are very important to us, not only for all the valuable and necessary services they selflessly provide, but also for their spiritual guidance and devotion to our parish members. They are providing a religious education, music and countless other works. Our dear nuns cook, clean and keep our altar and all our gardens absolutely beautiful.

The parish council is drafting a letter to be sent to the Mother General that will plead our case while being respectful of her authority in this matter. Father Chris and the church trustees and council will sign this letter on behalf of the entire parish. We are hoping for a miracle - we will pray!
