TODAY, EPIPHANY OF THE LORD: St. Matthew the evangelist writes his Gospel to the Jews.  He wants to convince the Jews that Jesus is truly the promised Savior and there is no sense to look for another savior.  In Him and on Him all promises and prophecies of the Old Testament were fulfilled. He is of Kingly origin: He is from the house of David.  But because the Jews refused the Revelation which was coming to them in Christ Jesus, he turned toward the pagans who received Him with gratitude.  So we might say that the Wise Men --- the Magi --- came as the “firstlings” of the pagans to adore Jesus who is the Incarnate Word of God!  The Jews did not have faith and therefore did not accept the Messiah even though all writings of the Old Testament were preparing them for it. The evangelist emphasizes that Herod and all citizens of Jerusalem were disturbed because of the Wise Men who came to adore Jesus.  The citizens could have joined them, but they stayed in their homes even though the Scribes found out that it is so written: Bethlehem was to be the place where Jesus was to be born.  Matthew said that Israel refused his Messiah and this was the reason why he was turning toward the pagans.  All peoples, without any restrictions, are called to the Kingdom that Jesus brought.  We must realize that what is needed in life is our faith.

PARENTING PERSPECTIVE: The day after Christmas can feel like a let down or a relief.  Now that the hustle is over that too often accompanies Christmas, pay attention to family bonding.  Relax together today.  Play a game, tell stories of past Christmases and deceased relatives.  Laugh, nap and enjoy each other.  Then the real gifting continues.
